Predators in Plain Sight – My Conversation with Bryan Kong

Joining Bryan Kong on his podcast was a profound and eye-opening experience. Together, we explored sensitive yet essential topics surrounding child safety and the hidden tactics predators use to infiltrate communities — often without raising suspicion.

One case we discussed was that of Richard Huckle — a man who came to Malaysia under the guise of doing “God’s work”. He taught English, integrated himself into communities, and sought out opportunities to help children in need. Yet, under this mask of kindness and faith, lurked a calculated predator who exploited trust to gain access and control.

Not only did he commit unimaginable acts of abuse, but he also documented them and shared his methods with other offenders online.

A Stark Reminder

While religion and charity remain forces of immense good, they can also be manipulated by those with malicious intent. This is why religious bodies, nonprofits, and grassroots organizations must implement:

  • Rigorous background checks
  • Education on warning signs
  • Stronger safeguarding measures that leave no room for exploitation

Safety Requires More than Faith

As a crime prevention specialist, I know we cannot shy away from uncomfortable truths. Protecting children isn’t just a matter of faith — it’s a matter of vigilance, education, and robust policy frameworks.

We must take collective responsibility to create safe environments where predators find no opportunity to operate. That means collaboration across governments, NGOs, community groups, and the public.
