If you’ve been following my posts (https://www.linkedin.com/in/shamir-rajadurai/), you know I often demonstrate how criminals exploit weaknesses in home security. Many of you have pointed out—sometimes with a bit of humor!—that I haven’t shared enough prevention tips. So, here’s a practical and effective tip that you can implement right away to protect your home: Install a single sided deadbolt.
Why a Single Sided Deadbolt?
A single sided deadbolt is a lock that only has a thumb turn on the inside of the door, with no keyhole or access from the outside. This design makes it nearly impossible for someone to pick or bump the lock from outside, even if they break glass or try to reach in. It’s a simple upgrade that can make a significant difference in your home’s security.
Benefits:
- No exterior keyhole: Eliminates the risk of lock picking or bumping from outside.
- Extra protection: Even if an intruder breaks a window or door panel, they can’t unlock the door from outside.
- Peace of mind: Adds a layer of security, especially for doors that don’t need to be unlocked from the outside (like back doors or doors between your garage and house).
How to Use It Effectively
- Install single sided deadbolts on doors that don’t require outside access, such as:
- Interior garage doors
- Back or side doors
- Doors with glass panels or windows nearby
- Combine with other security measures, such as solid core doors and security cameras, for comprehensive protection.
Crime prevention doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes, a simple change like upgrading your locks can make all the difference.
