The False Sense of Security: Why Appearances Can Be Deceptive

If you travel often, you need to watch this video.

We often believe something is secure simply because it looks secure.

Take the humble door latch—a standard feature in many homes and hotels, often trusted as a final line of defense. But as I demonstrate in my recent video, this familiar device can be bypassed using nothing more than a rubber band and a bit of tape.

It’s simple. Quick. And silent.

Which means the very tool we think is protecting us… might actually be giving us a False Sense of Security.

Real Security Starts with Awareness

As a crime prevention specialist, I’ve learned that real safety isn’t about what feels secure. It’s about understanding the methods criminals use, and being proactive—not reactive.

Because criminals don’t respect appearances.
They exploit them.

Three Steps to Real Security

  1. Always question the effectiveness of your security measures.
Don’t assume a lock or latch is foolproof just because it’s there.
  2. Test your environment the way a criminal would.
Look for vulnerabilities. Try to bypass your own security—before someone else does.
  3. Don’t just install—understand.
Know how your security devices work, and more importantly, how they can fail.

Let’s not wait for something to go wrong before we get it right.
